Dating coach

Wikipedia: Dating coach

A dating coach helps clients improve their success in dating and relationships.

Dating involves a complex set of social rules and conventions. A dating coach directs and trains a client on various aspects of meeting and attracting long-term partners and meeting more compatible prospects. The focus of most programs is on confident and congruent communication. Dating coaches cover a broad range of topics such as flirting, fashion, evolutionary biology, psychology, dancing and compatibility.

Dating coaches typically charge rates similar to that of other professional counselors (e.g. $75-125/hour), but sometimes much more.[1] Seminars involving multiple audience members typically charge less than one-on-one meetings.

Technique

Dating coaches may coach through electronic books, one-on-one coaching, small group seminars, and weekend workshops. One-on-one coaching can involve counselling and in-the-field coaching[2], which can involve practicing flirting[1] or going out with a coach of the opposite sex on a mock date and being critiqued throughout the date.[3] They teach pickup lines, how to conduct better conversations, how to dress, how to hug appropriately, and anything else that may help achieve success in dating.[4] Common elements of dating coaches' tips include the need to decide what you are looking for and remain positive.[1]

Some dating coaches specialize in helping with online dating.[5] This could include helping people rewrite their online profiles to obtain better results,[6] start initial email conversations, get professional photo shoots, and so on.

Dating seminars

Dating seminars are being taught by commercial dating companies where dating coaches share their knowledge on meeting the opposite sex. Sometimes dating coaches take the clients out in public to help the clients approach and seduce women.[2] This method of teaching is heavily linked to the seduction community and the companies which cater to it. One of the first companies was Mystery Method which pioneered taking men out to bars and clubs to teach men how to seduce women by first demonstrating it in person.[7] and Impact Interaction, the first European dating coaching company [8] also mentioned in 'The Game'.

Different dating seminars can take vastly different approaches to the subject. Christian dating seminars, on the other hand, may stress differences between love and lust and knowing one's own self-worth.[9] Muslim dating seminars may also deal with how to find a mate without compromising religious principles.[10]

Stigma

There has been a stigma attached to those who seek help from dating coaches. Some counterarguments to this stigma are that most people have dating coaches in the form of older siblings, charismatic friends, or honest lovers; and that it is socially acceptable to seek coaches in other, potentially less important aspects of life such as guitar playing.[11] A response to this is that dating is easier than activities like guitar playing, and coaches should be unnecessary.

A counterargument to that response is that there are many people who have been out of the dating world for so long that the techniques that used to work for them (such as going out to bars) no longer work; and some people have barriers that they need to deal with before they can be successful.[12] Moreover, there are very few economic and social pressures for men and women to compromise in their relationships, and people who lack romantic appeal or personal excitement can no longer count on other factors such as strong work ethic or good and stable income to compensate for what they lack in sex appeal. [13]

Despite the perceived stigma towards dating coaches there is evidence that the mainstream media and popular thought is becoming more accepting towards them. The recent film Hitch (featuring Will Smith) and the reality TV show The Pick-up Artist both indicate a growing awareness of the presence of dating coaches in society and their function. While many dating coaches prefer to keep their real identity secret due to the perceived stigma towards the profession, a few are well-known and frequently appear in the media such as Erik Von Markovik (host of The Pick Up Artist with appearances on CNN and VH1), Jordan Harbinger (Co-Founder of The Art of Charm, co-host Game On on Sirius XM Radio and with appearances on The Today Show on NBC and other media),Angel Donovan Adam Lyons (appearances on Fox, NBC and Channel 4) and Nick Savoy (appearances on Dr Phil and Tyra Banks).
