David Wilson Campbell (born January 14, 1942 in Manistee, Michigan) is a former American baseball player and current sportscaster. His nickname is "Soup", an apparent reference to the brand name Campbell's Soup.

Biography

Campbell began his playing career with the University of Michigan, and signed with the Detroit Tigers' system as an amateur free agent in 1964. He played mostly as a utility infielder for the Tigers, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Astros in a big-league career that spanned eight seasons (1967-74).

In the late 1970s Campbell began a career in broadcasting, doing radio play-by-play for the Padres as well as San Diego State University football and basketball. In the 1990s he was the Colorado Rockies' color commentator, and since 1990 he has worked for ESPN as a color commentator on that network's television and radio coverage of MLB (most notably on ESPN Radio's national Sunday Night Baseball broadcasts with Dan Shulman and, currently, Gary Thorne), as well as a commentator on Baseball Tonight and other in-studio shows. His voice can also be heard in the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable game series MLB 08: The Show and MLB 09: The Show.

It was revealed shortly after the death of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock that Hancock and Campbell had spoken at a restaurant only hours before Hancock's accident in the early morning of April 29, 2007. Campbell has denied the report that Hancock told him that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa would be fining Hancock for getting hung over and missing a game a couple of days earlier.[1]
