David Allan Cates is a novelist and director of Missoula Medical Aid. He is the author of the novels Hunger in America, a New York Times Notable Book, and X Out of Wonderland, a farce about the global economy modeled on Voltaire's Candide. He grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and has a journalism degree and a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Montana. He has worked as a professional basketball player in Central America, a fishing guide, and a high school writing teacher.
