Biography
Exciting career stories could be concocted by assuming that the name David Evans is the same person each time it showed up. Even by timidly staying within the confines of one genre a sense of upward mobility can be strongly sensed. One such David Evans, who unfortunately turns out to be two such David Evans, started out in gospel music as a lowly hairdresser and make-up artist, preparing wholesome combos for a CD cover photo shoot. This Evans is really a songwriter, though, but what better way to get the ear of a recording artist than to be simultaneously applying anti-reflective powder to his nose? Eventually, the hairdresser ended up writing songs with Al Green, which get covered by the hippest contemporary gospel artists, even Woody Rock. One of the ultimate facts in the music business is that nobody named David Evans is the same as anyone else named David Evans -- not as sentimental a notion as "paying your dues" but just as true. A hairdresser by this name was indeed credited with make-up and hair for the Martins on the group's 1996 release entitled Wherever You Are. His credit has been mistakenly listed as Dr. David Evans in some sources, leading to confusion with the roots music scholar, producer, and performer of the same name. It would be imprudent to immediately rule out the possibility of someone with a doctorate being forced to work as a hairdresser, or that someone without a doctorate would stoop to the heinous level of pretending to have one. The real Dr. David Evans has actually produced records of gospel groups and probably stroked plenty of egos in the process, but he has not had to do anyone's hair and make-up -- yet. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
