David Fagen

Fagen, David (1875-1901?) African-American captain in the Filipino nationalist army, born in Tampa, Florida. Fagen defected from the U.S. Army to participate in a guerrilla war against the American troops enforcing concessions granted by the treaty that ended the Spanish-American War (1898). Many African-American soldiers sympathized with the Filipino cause, and Fagen's rebellion came to represent their resistance to American imperialism. Fagen's uncanny ability to evade capture by the U.S. Army was embarrassing to his American opposition.
