Biography

Established musicians such as Annie Lennox, Tom Jones, and Alison Moyet have sung lyrics written by David Freeman, a singer who has inspired a small yet devoted cult following since his work with the new wave band the Lover Speaks in the mid-'80s. In the late '70s, Freeman was a guitarist for the punk group the Flys, releasing two LPs. After the Flys broke up in 1980, Freeman tried to become a solo artist; he recorded the single "Stop in the Name of Love." In 1985, Freeman collaborated with former Flys bassist Joseph Hughes as the Lover Speaks. The duo sent a demo tape to Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics; it was eventually given to Jimmy Iovine, who produced the band's 1986 debut on A&M Records, The Lover Speaks. Although the group had a minor hit in the U.K. with the single "No More 'I Love You's," A&M Records left the band's second album, The Big Lie, in the vault. By 1988, The Lover Speaks was history. In the '90s, Freeman resumed his solo career. Instead of signing another contract with a huge company, Freeman released several solo albums on independent labels. Although none of the LPs acquired much press or commercial attention, Freeman received the artistic freedom that was denied him in the '80s. ~ Michael Sutton, All Music Guide
