Biography

Bassoonist David Miller was a classmate of pianist and composer Anthony Davis at Yale University in the '70s, a scene that produced many fine contemporary jazz artists such as trombonist George Lewis, soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, and percussionist Gerry Hemingway -- all of them eager to get out of the culturally dead city of New Haven. By the '80s, Davis had established himself as a superior composer of ambitious jazz pieces. Miller took part in sessions for the pianist's album Undine, a collection of two extended pieces released on the Mesa Blue Moon label. Apart from this, he doesn't seem to have pursued a recording career on an instrument that, despite its great potential, is still considered something of an oddity in jazz. ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide
