Review

Jazz bassist Mel Graves is also a gifted contemporary classical composer. Day of Love focuses on this aspect of his work. The title piece is a moving song cycle based on the poems of Pablo Neruda and dedicated to the composer's wife. The seven songs are scored for flute (Bob Afifi), baritone (Thomas Buckner), and bass (Graves). An instrumental introduction and a bass interlude complete the cycle. The words of Neruda did not only inspire touching melodies, but also brought sounds from South America. Afifi's flute is central to the work; its aerial lines evoke the Andes, while the bass anchors the piece in jazz and Buckner's elegant voice brings it into contemporary music. It does not really result in third stream jazz, but in an idiom where all influences are profoundly integrated. Simply put, "Day of Love" may be Graves' finest composition -- the work of a fully-matured composer. "Global Village," an earlier piece (1988, while the previous one dates from 1996), takes the form of a string quartet and is thus less striking. Performed here by Ethel (Ralph Farris, Dorothy Lawson, Todd Reynolds, and Mary Rowell), it resulted from a commission by the Kronos Quartet. This music is all about movement (the three parts are titled as dances), contrasts, and emotion channeled through playfulness. The last movement particularly shares affinities with Boris Kovac's string quartets. The performance is convincing, but the overall interest of "Global Village" pales in comparison with the title piece. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide

Day of Love (恋ようび Koiyōbi?) is a Japanese dating sim produced by ACTRESS, originally released on April 25, 2000, on CD-ROM. The English release was by Hirameki International in the DVD-based AnimePlay format on February 17, 2004.

Plot

Day of Love is about Haruki, the main character, who knew about a girl named Maho when he was young but forgot about her when he was older, which had made her angry when she asked him years later when he's in high school. So to get back at him for not remembering, she dresses up as a guy and lives in the same dorm as him using the alias Mao.

Main Characters

Haruki Tojo: The main character and protagonist of the game and the character the player controls. Being somewhat insensitive and cold plus having been voted to be his school's 'Chairman of Conduct', Haruki has been mis-nicknamed 'The Devil Chairman' although in truth he's actually kinda thoughtful but lazy. He once knew Maho as a child, he forgot about her when she moved away, thus enraging Maho when the two meet again at a park near Haruki's school.

Maho Yoshikawa: A childhood friend of the main character and the adopted little sister of Michiru Hiragi, Maho is the main heroine of the story. When she was little she developed a strong crush on Haruki and continued having one on him even when she moved away for medical reasons. Making a bet with Michiru, Maho confronts Haruki with hopes he would remember her only to become enraged when she finds out he had completely forgotten all about her. Having lost the bet with Michiru, Maho is forced to attend a semester at Haruki's school as Mao Hiragi, a male student but Haruki's room mate as well. She decides to use her newfound position to get revenge on Haruki, but realizes she still loves him too much.

Mao Hiragi: Having lost a bet with her older sister, Michiru, Maho Yoshikawa was forced to attend a school semester as a guy, and thus Mao Hiragi was born. A very frail and girlish boy by appearance, Mao is actually very stubborn and manipulative. At first he(she) is hostile and critical toward Haruki, Mao eventually becomes a close friend of Haruki's and helps him out on several occasions.

Isami Anayama: A young and talented actor at the main character's school, she is the sister of Seiji. Although the head of the school's drama club and a talented actress, she is serious, proud, and generally unsociable. She loves acting and is always trying to improve, but lately she feels she's in a stunt and partial blames it on her fellow club members. She has a crush on the Haruki and often looks to Haruki for help and support with her acting.
