Daybreak is a master-planned community over 4,000 acres (16 km²) in size being built by land development company Kennecott Land in South Jordan, Utah. Home construction began in 2004 and the community is expected to be built-out by 2020, although development could continue until 2030. When completed, it will contain more than 20,000 residential homes and 9.1 million square feet (850,000 m²) of commercial space.[1] The Mid-Jordan Line of the light rail TRAX system is expected to reach the community in 2011. The Mountain View Corridor, when constructed, will also provide access to Daybreak, and Bangerter Highway lies along the eastern edge. It is also located adjacent to a shopping center known as "The District", which contains 1.2 million square feet of retail space.[2] On October 1, 2005, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the construction of the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple, which was built in a prominent location in the development. Ground was broken for the temple on December 16, 2006, and the temple was dedicated on August 23, 2009.
The development currently contains two elementary schools (Daybreak and Eastlake, with a third school, Early Light Academy, slated to open for the 2009-10 school year), a recreational center, a corporate center, and the LDS temple. A man-made lake, Oquirrh Lake, is also being developed for motorized boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. The lake began construction in 2005 and is expected to be fully developed by 2010.[3] Kennecott Land's plan for the development of their land in western Salt Lake County calls for Daybreak to be one of two major urban centers in the development, the other being the land west of Magna. [4]
All homes in the community are built to Energy Star standards, the first community in the state to adhere to those standards, and numerous other features of the community are environmentally friendly.[5] All homes in Daybreak also have fiber-optic connections.[6] The community has been designed to be walkable, and most of the homes have been constructed using some elements of traditional architecture. Currently the community is divided into 3 villages: Founder's Village, Eastlake Village, and North Shore. On February 18, 2009 Kennecott Land announced plans for a fourth village called Garden Park, which will contain 500 homes and will require that at least one member of the household be over the age of 55. This new village will contain 500 new homes.[7]
