The Dayton Bombers are entering their 17 season as an ECHL ice hockey team located in Dayton, Ohio, USA. The team is in the North Division of the ECHL's American Conference. The team was affiliated with the
Syracuse Crunch of the AHL and the
Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL,
an affiliation which ended October 4, 2007, as the Bombers were
replaced by the Elmira Jackals [1].
The Bombers originally played at Hara Arena from 1991-1996. The team moved to the Ervin J.
Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State
University in Dayton in 1996. They have played in front of over 2 million fans in
their 17 years.
2006-07 In the 2006-07 season Bombers fans saw their team come back from the depths, winning 17 more games than the
previous season and becoming North Division Champs by beating their rivals, the Cincinnati
Cyclones, 4 games to 3. The Bombers then went on to become American Conference Champions by beating the Florida Everblades 4 games to 3. From there they went on to face the National Conference Champion
Idaho Steelheads in the Kelly Cup Finals. In this championship series the Steelheads defeated
the Bombers 4 games to 1 to become ECHL Champions. The Dayton Bombers have yet to make it public that the team will be joining
the newly reformed 16 team International Hockey League. Which is to begin operations for the 2009-2010 hockey season. The Dayton
Bombers will be part of the International Hockey League's Southern Conference along with the Columbus Chill, Toledo Tanks, Troy
(Ohio) Tigers, Fort Wayne Komets, Indiana Ice (South Bend), Rockford Ice Hogs and the Peoria Rivermen. The IHL's Northern
Conference will be made of eight clubs from the state of Michigan and those clubs are the Detroit Vipers, Port Huron Ice Hawks,
Flint Generals, Saginaw Gears, Lansing Lancers, Kalamazoo Wings, Muskegon Fury and the Grand Rapids Griffins. As a side note
Dayton's first pro hockey club the Dayton Gems were a proud member of the former IHL 96.230.30.24
