De fīnibus bonorum et malorum (‘on the different conceptions of the chief good and evil’), treatise by Cicero in five books, addressed to M. Brutus, in which he sets out and criticizes the ethical systems of the Epicurean and Stoic schools, before giving the views of the ‘Old’ Academy. It was written in 45 BC (see CICERO (1) 5).
