(Latin, of fact/of right) The contrast between a matter of fact and one of right. For example, the de facto authority of a brigand over his followers is contrasted with de jure authority of a constitution or sovereign. A central problem of the philosophy of law is to discover which kinds of fact account for the emergence of de jure authority.
