Aurelio de la Vega
(b Havana, 28 Nov 1925). American composer of Cuban origin. He was a pupil of Frederick Kramer (1942-6) and in Los Angeles of Toch (1947-9). He then went back to Cuba, returning to California in 1959 and working there as a teacher. His music, in many genres including tape pieces, has developed from a Szymanowskian post-impressionism to a use of diverse avant-garde techniques, all of it expressive, forceful and carefully structured; since 1974 many of his works have included visual elements.
