De optimo genere ōrātōrum

Classical Literature Companion: De optimo genere ōrātōrum

De optimo genere ōrātōrum (‘on the best kind of orators’), by Cicero, an introduction to translations of the Greek orations De corona of Demosthenes and Against Ctesiphon of Aeschines (see CICERO (1) 5), which is only partially preserved. Cicero argues that Demosthenes, who wrote in Attic Greek, had such a command of every oratorical style that it is inappropriate to use the term Atticism to describe a plain style of oratory (see 1).
