De Pere is a city located in Brown County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2004 census estimate, the city had a total population of 22,875. De Pere is a suburb of Green Bay.
De Pere has two areas on the National Register of Historic Places. North Broadway Street Historic District is listed as #83003368. Large homes line Broadway, Ridgeway Blvd., Morris, Fulton, Franklin, Cass, Front, and Wisconsin Streets near the Fox River. [1]
The De Pere Lock and Dam Historic District (#93001331) was added in 1993. [2]
In 1671 French Jesuit explorer Père Claude-Jean Allouez founded the St. Francis Xavier Mission at the last set of rapids on the Fox River before entering the Bay of Green Bay. The site was known as Rapides Des Pères (rapids of the fathers) which became modern day De Pere.
St. Norbert College, which abuts the banks of the Fox River on the city's west side near the Claude Allouez Bridge, was founded by Norbertine Abbot Pennings in 1898.
A ticket for Powerball bought in De Pere won the jackpot in the September 5, 2007 drawing. The winner chose the $13.7 million cash option.
De Pere is located at 44°26'28" North, 88°4'6" West (44.441041, -88.068429)
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.3 km² (11.3 mi²). 27.5 km² (10.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.27% water.
As of the census estimate of 2004, there are 22,875 people residing in De Pere. As of 2000, 7,724 households, and 5,020 families reside in the city. The population density is 748.2/km² (1,938.4/mi²). There are 7,993 housing units at an average density of 290.9/km² (753.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.71% White, 0.54% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,724 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 27.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 14.8% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $50,282, and the median income for a family is $61,688. Males have a median income of $39,710 versus $27,166 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,013. 4.0% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
De Pere is the only city in the state of Wisconsin with two school districts. This is a hold over from when the communities on the east and west sides of the Fox River were indeed separate municipalities. While the city has been in its current form since 1890, the two original school districts remain.
