Dead or Alive 4

Games: Dead or Alive 4

Game Description

Tecmo's flagship fighting series continues with the console-exclusive release of Dead or Alive 4. Once again, players can select from a number of characters skilled in various combat styles, from Ryu Hayabusa's custom Ninjutsu techniques learned from his years as a ninja, to teenager Hitomi's mastery of karate. No matter which character is selected, he or she can perform a number of quick-strike attacks, guards, holds, combos, and throws to keep foes off balance. The environments in Dead or Alive 4 play as important a role in the fighting as the characters themselves, with players able to use scenery objects, such as trees, to pin opponents, or in some cases, smash through barriers to continue battling in completely new areas.

Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) is a fighting game developed by Team Ninja for the Xbox 360 video game console. As the latest entry in the Dead or Alive video game series, its plot follows the events of the 2001 title Dead or Alive 3. The game features 22 playable characters and many multi-tiered and interactive fighting arenas.

The Platinum Hits version is labeled 1080p, while the original is labeled 1080i. When the original Dead or Alive 4 version was released in 2005 1080p resolution was not possible (hence the game being labeled 1080i)[citation needed] but due to updates released for the Xbox 360 plus VGA and HDMI output the system is now able to output the full 1080p. That is why the later released Platinum Hits version is labeled 1080p. The contents of the two copies of the games are exactly the same, as it is the Xbox 360 console which upscales the games to the chosen resolution, and not the games themselves.

Many critics were confident that the game wouldn't impress the public. However, on the day of release, 1.1 million copies were sold, making it the fastest selling fighting game of all time. As of January 2008 the game has sold 7.7 million copies worldwide

The game has a number of updates in reference to previous titles. The counter system has been tightened, making the window for counters shorter and more difficult to execute. The amount of damage that counters inflict has been changed. In Dead or Alive Ultimate, the counters were rather damaging and in Dead or Alive 3, the amount was much less, relying on players to strike or throw more to defeat their opponents. Characters' movelists have been vastly updated as well. Finally, four new characters have been added to the fighting roster, with returns from a couple of past characters as well.

Story

Dead or Alive 4 focuses on the story of Helena, the young woman taking over the mantle of DOATEC as its second chairman.

Pre-release

In an interview with Famitsu Xbox, Itagaki remarked that he spent 99% of his time developing Dead or Alive 4, while only sleeping 40 minutes in four days.[2] On May 12, 2005, the first screens from the game were leaked on the internet via the elotrolado.net message boards.[3]

The first official screenshots, in-game demos and cinematics were presented by Microsoft at press conferences [1] with the game originally slated to be a launch title for the Xbox 360. However, the game was delayed many times before eventually being released on 29 December 2005, more than a month after the console debuted.[4]

Famitsu Xbox editor-in-chief Munetatsu Matsui pointed to Dead or Alive 4's absence as a launch title as the main factor behind the slow sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan.[5]

Character roster

New characters

DOA4 contains three new playable characters: Kokoro, a young Geisha in training; Eliot, a 16 year-old boy from England and protégé to Gen Fu; and La Mariposa, a female Lucha Libre wrestler.

In addition, DOA4 features a playable unlockable character from the Halo series. The November 2005 issue of Game Informer revealed that this character is a female Spartan supersoldier, going by the name "Spartan-458".[6] It would later be revealed that her real name would be "Nicole".[7] In conjunction, a Halo-themed stage named Nassau Station is incorporated in the game.

Tournaments

Dead or Alive 4 was included in the Championship Gaming Series[8] and World Cyber Games.[9]

Official Xbox Magazine 8.5/10

Dead or Alive 4 has received generally positive reviews.

IGN gave the game 9.0/10, calling it "a move in the right direction for the series", and praised the fighting system as "deeper and more sophisticated".[10] GameSpot awarded the game a score of 8.8/10, with one of its only negative comments going to a couple of features during online play. The website calls the online lobby system "cute but feels needlessly tacked on", but still praises the online system as providing a "near-limitless challenge for competitive players".[11] Gamezone.com gave it 9.3/10 praising its online lobby mode as "really cool, interesting, and very unique [sic]",[12] while Teamxbox.com states that "Team Ninja have created a true work of art", and gives it 9.1/10.[13] However, Jolt Online Gaming UK gives the game an average 6.5/10, calling the single player mode "an exercise in frustration and joypad throwing". The website also states that the online mode "is probably best locked away and only spoken of in hushed tones when you think no one who isn’t in the know is listening".[14]
