Dean Heller (born May 10, 1960) is the Representative for the state's Nevada's 2nd Congressional District. He also was the state's Secretary of State.

Biography

A long time resident of Carson City, Heller earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, specializing in finance and securities analysis, from the University of Southern California in 1985. He then worked as an institutional stockbroker and as a broker/trader on the Pacific Stock Exchange. [1]

Heller served in the Nevada Assembly from 1990 to 1994. He was first elected Secretary of State in 1994, and was re-elected in 1998 and 2002.

Heller was the Nevada Secretary of State between 1995 and 2007.

Beliefs and Ideologies

Supports war in Iraq

Heller is a supporter for the war in Iraq. On March 23, 2007, he voted against bringing U.S. soldiers home from Iraq.

On July 30, 2007, he told the Reno Gazette Journal, “Certainly we need a military surge, but we [also] need a surge in diplomacy.” These comments came after the country’s largest Sunni political group announced it would walk away from the national government.[3]

Supports federal oil and gas subsidies

In January, 2007, Heller voted to sustain federal oil & gas exploration subsidies. [4]

Opposed raising minimum wage

In January, 2007, Heller voted against increasing the federal minimum wage to $7.25. [5]

Opposed competitive prescription drug coverage

In January, 2007, Heller voted no on requiring negotiated Prescription Drug prices for Medicare part D.[6]

Opposes Labor

In March, 2007, Heller voted against restricting employer interference in union organizing.[7]

Opposes Abortion

On July 19, 2007, Heller voted for an amendment that would have cut off funding for Planned Parenthood and other family planning organizations.[8]

Congress.org effectiveness scale

In 2007, Congress.org rated Dean Heller as the second least effective and powerful congressmen in the U.S. House of Representatives. He tied with one other congressmen for the rank of 435 out of 438. Heller's rank among Republicans is 199 out of 202 congressmen.[9]

2006 Congressional race

Heller announced his candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in 2005. On August 15, 2006, he narrowly won the Republican primary for the congressional seat being vacated by gubernatorial candidate Jim Gibbons. Heller received 24,781 votes to Assemblywoman Sharron Angle's 24,353. Dawn Gibbons, a former State Assemblywoman and wife of the incumbent, finished third with 17,328 votes.

Heller defeated University of Nevada Regent and Democratic candidate Jill Derby in the November general election by 5 percent [1]. Heller lost Washoe County. However, he won most of the rural areas of the district by margins of 2-to-1 or more, allowing him to win the district by 12,600 votes.
