1. (Holst: Sāvitri). Bass. Visits Sāvitri to take her husband. Moved by her inability to continue life without her husband, Death restores him to her. Created (1916) by Harrison Cook.

2. (Ullmann: Der Kaiser von Atlantis). Bass-Baritone. He resents the loss of the old ways of dying and the introduction of new mechanized methods and goes on strike. When the Emperor begs him to return to the old ways, he will do so on condition that the Emperor agrees to be the first to die. Created (1944) by Karel Berman (who also sang the Loudspeaker); (1975) by Tom Haenen.
