Hydrophiinae

TAXONOMY

Boa antarctica Shaw, 1794, Australia.

German: Todesotter.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

This species has an average length of 20–39 in (0.5–1 m). Unlike other elapids, it is thick bodied and thus resembles vipers. It is variable in color, ranging from light brown to nearly black, usually with a banding pattern.

DISTRIBUTION

Eastern and southern Australia.

HABITAT

The death adder inhabits grasslands to desert.

BEHAVIOR

Unlike most elapids, death adders wait for prey. They bury themselves in substrate and attract prey with a worm-like tail. The species is nocturnal and secretive.

FEEDING ECOLOGY AND DIET

The death adder feeds mostly on small reptiles, but it also preys on frogs and small mammals.

REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY

This species is live-bearing, with females giving birth to up to 20 young.

CONSERVATION STATUS

Not threatened.

SIGNIFICANCE TO HUMANS

The death adder is considered one of the most dangerous snakes because it is so highly venomous. The death rate due to bites has declined because of the availability of antivenin and widespread knowledge of the Sutherland pressure-immobilization first-aid technique. This snake is sometimes found in urban areas.

Death Adder (Roland Burroughs), a supervillain in the Marvel Comics universe, was one of the original members of the Serpent Society.

Fictional character biography

Roland Burroughs was born in Rochester, New York. A small time thug, Death Adder was chosen by Roxxon Oil Company to participate in a covert operation to retrieve the Serpent Crown. At Roxxon's Mutagenic Laboratory, Roland was surgically given gills and a bionic tail, as well as poison-tipped claws, to help him in his endeavors; it was also because of an accident while implanting his gills that Death Adder was rendered mute. During the mission, he and his group, the Serpent Squad, came into direct conflict with The Thing and Triton. The Serpent Squad was successful in finding the Serpent Crown, but were defeated by the heroes and taken into custody.

He and his former teammates, Black Mamba and Anaconda, joined together again to infiltrate a zoo and find a valuable weapon known as the "microscanner," which scans and disrupts various body functions. They were ambushed and defeated by Iron Man, but were able to escape. They later received an invitation to join Sidewinder's Serpent Society. It was there that Death Adder was able to shine, killing M.O.D.O.K. during their first mission. He also participated in the mission to retrieve the retired Porcupine's costume, eventually leading to a battle with Captain America.

When ordered to bring the failed Princess Python back to her original group, the Circus of Crime, Death Adder's serpent saucer crashed in the South Bronx due to unrevealed reasons. Leaving Princess Python where she was and attempting to take a cab back to the base, he was shot and killed by the Scourge of the Underworld, who was posing as the driver. His body was later found by Sidewinder, and his closest friends Anaconda and Black Mamba were able to mourn his death.
