Decatur is a city located in Wise County, Texas, United States. This city was named after Stephen Decatur, Jr. As of the 2007 census, the city had a total population of 5,478. It is the county seat of Wise County[3]. Decatur is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and is located 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth and 45 miles northwest of Dallas. Decatur is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas, while Wise County is the fourth fastest growing county in Texas.

Decatur is located at 33°13′52″N 97°35′19″W / 33.23111°N 97.58861°W / 33.23111; -97.58861 (33.231073, -97.588628).[4]

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2007, there were 5,478 people residing in the city. The population density was 747.6 people per square mile (288.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 81.64% White, 1.98% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 12.44% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.53% of the population.

There were 3,845 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the city the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,449, and the median income for a family was $40,580. Males had a median income of $30,512 versus $21,213 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,402. About 10.1% of families and 12.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 21.1% of those 65 and older.

Education

The City of Decatur is served by the Decatur Independent School District (DISD). DISD is a large 3A School District just northwest of Fort Worth and bordering Northwest ISD. Decatur ISD is centered in Decatur, Texas, county seat in Wise County. The district has five campuses: Decatur High School, Decatur Middle School, Decatur Intermediate School, Carson Elementary School and Rann Elementary School. In the 2007-2008 school year, Decatur ISD's enrollment was approximately 3,000 students.

Decatur Baptist College (now Dallas Baptist University) was the world's first junior college. Its Administration Building is now the home of the Wise County Heritage Museum.

Constructions

The Service Broadcasting Tower Decatur[5][6], a guyed TV-mast, belongs to world's tallest constructions.[citation needed]

During the last full week of July, Decatur is the home to the Wise County Old Settlers reunion. The Wise County Old Settlers Settlers Reunion has been going on since 1864.
