Review

Shostakovich's Eighth String Quartet (and the Chamber Symphony Op. 110a that was arranged from it) is arguably one of the composer's most impassioned works. It is filled with raw emotions, ranging from despair and isolation to fierce aggression. Constantine Orbelian and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra certainly provide a capable performance of the Chamber Symphony, but it often seems too soft around the edges. The first movement, for example, is played with a beautiful, round sound that unfortunately seems inappropriate for the desolation it is trying to depict. The second movement, which has the character marking Allegro molto, is quite slow and lacks the necessary brutality. There is also a great deal of reverb when listening in SACD mode, making the sharp, angular articulations seem rather dull.

On the other hand, the Schnittke Piano Concerto is quite successful, and Orbelian excels in his role as soloist. Like the Shostakovich, this concerto is replete with introspection and angst. There is still too much reverb in the mix and fast sections like the second-movement Allegro become rather blurry, but this is less problematic here than in the Shostakovich. Considering SACDs are supposed to provide listeners with an enhanced listening experience, it's a shame that this particular album does such a poor job of capturing articulation.
