Game Description
Deer Hunter Monster Buck 4-Pack, distributed by WizardWorks Group, combines four titles designed by Sunstorm Interactive and GW Press, Inc. in one collection. Included are the original Deer Hunter (1997), Deer Hunter Extended Season (1998) and the 1998 Deer Hunter Screen Saver, all by Sunstorm. The remaining title, Deer Hunter Companion, was released in 1998 by GW Press, Inc.In the original Deer Hunter and the follow-on title Deer Hunter Extended Season, the player has a choice of several weapons including a .270 caliber rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a compound bow and, from Extended, a black powder muzzleloader with its inconsistencies (e.g., less accuracy, misfiring proclivity, long reload time) built in. These modules allow the hunter to use a tree stand, attractant scent or a cover scent to mask human odor.
There are six hunting locations (three from each title) with specific characteristics and deer population. Deer Hunter offers an Indiana winter setting, the Colorado alpine meadows or autumn in the Arkansas woodlands. Three hunting grounds from the Extended Season pack include a Nebraska winter, a Kentucky fall and the somewhat buck-scarce Adirondack Mountains where the largest racks can be found. To hone hunting skills, a Target Range, complete with bulls-eye and deer targets is available for practice with all weapons except the muzzleloader.
Gameplay incorporates hunting techniques such as the spotting of deer droppings, rubbings, bedding areas and the consideration of wind direction. Perspective is from both a hunting view, where the player looks through the eyes of the hunter with binoculars or rifle sight, and a map-view from which to choose a new hunting spot. Additional hunter paraphernalia includes the deer call and the deer antler rattle. Each time a large enough buck is bagged, it is placed in the Trophy Room where only the most prized bucks are showcased. Pressing the F10 key takes a picture of it for posterity.
The Deer Hunter Companion, over 100 pages, includes tips and strategies for Deer Hunter, real life deer hunting stories, facts and tips, the hunter's pledge, a Whitetail Deer quiz and a short compendium of wacky laws pertaining to deer hunting. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
