Defense Transportation System

U.S. Department of Defense system for coordinating routine requirements for military sealift, airlift, and ground transportation. When an overseas deployment is ordered, the air, ground, and ocean shipping is coordinated by the Department of Defense Transportation Command.

Military Dictionary: Defense Transportation System

(DOD) That portion of the Nation's transportation infrastructure that supports Department of Defense common-user transportation needs across the range of military operations. It consists of those common-user military and commercial assets, services, and systems organic to, contracted for, or controlled by the Department of Defense. Also called DTS. See also common-user transportation; transportation system.
