Biography

Forced from his position as keyboardist for Dutch goth-rock luminaries Within Temptation due to chronic illness in 2001, Martijn Westerholt worked to get himself back to match fitness and over the course of the next few years began to write music. Bringing together some of the more well known musicians in the genre (including Marko Hielata, Jan Yrlund, and Liv Kristine) as well as lead vocalist Charlotte Wessels of To Elysium, Westerholt was able to realize a new musical project, and he named it Delain. Signed to Roadrunner, the group released a single ("Frozen") in 2006, and their debut album in 2007, entitled Lucidity. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide

Delain is a Dutch symphonic metal band. The band was founded by the ex-keyboardist of Within Temptation, Martijn Westerholt.

Biography

Delain was founded by Martijn Westerholt, the ex-keyboardist and brother of one the founders of Within Temptation, Robert Westerholt. He left Within Temptation in 2001 when he suffered from Pfeiffer's disease. He started Delain in 2002. The band started recording the debut album in July 2005, after they had signed a contract with Roadrunner Records.

The band consists of Martijn Westerholt (keyboard) and Charlotte Wessels (vocals). Furthermore, the live band consists of Rob van der Loo (bass), Ewout Pieters (guitar) and Sander Zoer (drums).

For their first album Lucidity they invited several well known musicians: Marco Hietala from Nightwish and Tarot (bass, vocals), Liv Kristine from Leaves' Eyes (vocals), Ariën van Weesenbeek from ex-God Dethroned, Epica (drums), Ad Sluijter from ex-Epica (guitar), George Oosthoek (growling) and Guus Eikens, both former members of Orphanage, Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation (vocals) and Jan Yrlund from Imperia (guitar).

Delain's first album Lucidity was to be released April 2006, but was first postponed to the end May and after that to 21 August before it was finally released on 4 September. Samples of their music have been released on their website, and full versions of the songs Sleepwalker's Dream and The Gathering, as well as the music video for the song Frozen[1]. From Lucidity they released the singles Frozen, See Me In Shadow and The Gathering, the last one being a download-only single.

At the end of 2007 Delain stated that they intend to release a second album in 2008, so far, the band has begun playing two new songs live: "Stay Forever" & "Start Swimming". In November 2008, it was announced on their official website that the new album, April Rain, would be released on February 9th, 2009. Also, they played a new song on Dutch television called I'll Reach You. This turned out to be a different version of the song than would appear on the forthcoming album.

Since then, the release date of April Rain has been pushed back to March 30, 2009,[2] to coincide with foreign release dates. The first single from the album was the title track April Rain. In October, it was announced that the second single from this album would be Stay Forever.

Delain was nominated for the category New Sounds of Europe at EMA 2007. They were knocked out on the eleventh day. They were also nominated for the TMF Awards 2007 in the category "Best Rock".
