Franchise history

During the franchise auction for the Indian Premier League teams, Sandeep Reddy purchased the Delhi Daredevils for $84 million.

2008 IPL Season

The Daredevils were well poised from the onset of the first IPL season, having most of their core players—with the exception of Daniel Vettori—available for the whole tournament. The team built their batting lineup around Delhi openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir and used the majority of their foreign player quota on their bowling attack lead by Glenn McGrath and Mohammed Asif.

The team started the tournament well, winning 4 of their first 5 games. However, they were unable to sustain this and finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a record of 7-6. Their performance was good enough to make the semi-finals, where they lost by 105 runs against the Rajasthan Royals. Royals, who had lost to the Daredevils in their first encounter, went on to win the title.

Drug Scandal

On 14 July 2008, it was revealed by the IPL that Daredevils pace bowler Mohammad Asif tested positive for an unnamed banned substance. As Asif had not applied for any therapeutic use exemption, the positive test was considered a breach of the IPL's drug policy. The case will be reviewed by the IPL's three-member drug tribunal of medical and legal experts.[2]

2009 IPL season

The Daredevils dominated for much of the 2009 IPL, finishing at the top of the table after the league stages despite a mid-tournament injury to icon and captain Virender Sehwag and the relatively poor form of Gautam Gambhir. A.B. de Villiers and Tillekeratne Dilshan both had developed greatly since the last season and set up many large totals for the Daredevils, with deVilliers hitting one of only two centuries in the 2009 IPL. The bowling, which in 2008 was composed mainly of overseas players (Maharoof, Vettori, McGrath, Asif) was bolstered by a trade to gain former Team India paceman Ashish Nehra in exchange for Shikhar Dhawan. Pradeep Sangwan and Amit Mishra had both improved since last season, and the offseason signing of Dirk Nannes from Australia created a bowling lineup that was strong. In fact, the Daredevils left Vettori, Collingwood and McGrath on the bench for most of the tournament, preferring to go with the overseas combination of Nannes, de Villers, Dilshan and David Warner.

However, despite dominating for the regular season, the Daredevils crumbled in the semi-final under a fierce batting assault by Adam Gilchrist, who hit the fastest fifty in IPL history (just 17 balls). Nannes in particular, who was again picked over McGrath, was punished by Gilchrist and later Andrew Symonds. The disappointing semifinal meant Delhi did not qualify for the Champions League and did not contest the final of the 2009 IPL despite having the best record in the league stages. However, Delhi managed to qualify for champions league twenty20 because of their performance in group stage.

On May 22, 2009, the Daredevils entered a partnership with Eastern Titans of the South African domestic cricket competition to help develop young talent on both teams.[1]

Iconic Australian pace bowler Glen McGrath has expressed disappointment that he was not picked to play any match during the whole season, and has placed a question mark over his participation in the IPL 2010 with the Daredevils. [2]

Home Ground

The Daredevils play their home matches in the Feroz Shah Kotla ground located in New Delhi, under the newly installed floodlights.

Brand Ambassador

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar was the brand ambassador of the team during the 2008 Season but opted not to return for the 2009 season due to a busy schedule. However, Akshay was seen at a few of the team's games cheering them on.

Famous Bollywood playback singer Kailash Kher has sung the team anthem - "Khel Front Foot Pe" a.k.a. " We Are Fighters". It is played at every Delhi Daredevils match.

Players

Virender Sehwag has been accorded the icon player status in the Delhi team and was also the captain of the side. However, he resigned and passed on the reigns to the other star player Gautam Gambhir. The team also boasts of players like AB de Villiers, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Paul Collingwood, David Warner, Andrew McDonald and Owais Shah. Bowling attack includes Glenn McGrath, Daniel Vettori, Farveez Maharoof and Dirk Nannes.

Team also includes promising, young Indian players - Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary, Yo Mahesh and Amit Mishra.
