demagogue (dēmagōgos, ‘leader of the people’). This term to describe a leader of the people arose in Athens in the late fifth century BC and it usually had the pejorative sense of an unprincipled mob orator. The most notable demagogues were Cleon, Hyperbolus, Cleophon, and Androcles.
