German Literature Companion:

Der Archipelagus

Archipelagus, Der, a poem by F. Hölderlin written in 1800. Though often termed an elegy because of its tone, it is not written in elegiac verse but in 296 classical hexameters. It laments the loss of the greatness of Greece and looks forward to a revival of Hellenic greatness in western Europe.
