Der Graf von Ratzeburg

German Literature Companion: Der Graf von Ratzeburg

Graf von Ratzeburg, Der, an unfinished symbolical drama in stylized prose by E. Barlach, drafted in 1927, published and performed posthumously in 1951. The eponymous central character, a pilgrim to the Holy Land, symbolizes the seeker's quest. After various encounters and vicissitudes he finally accepts death. His spiritual progress has reached a goal: without his finding God, God has found him.
