Der Kampf der Sänger

Kampf der Sänger, Der, a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann, first published in 1818 in Urania and then included in vol. 2 of Die Serapionsbrüder. The title is followed by the words ‘Einer alten Chronik nacherzählt’. It is a retelling of the story of Der Wartburgkrieg as recounted by J. C. Wagenseil in Von der Meister-Singer Holdseligen Kunst (1697), and lays particular stress on the daemonic art of Heinrich von Ofterdingen.
