Laufen, Der, a Novelle by E. Strauß, published in the collection Hans und Grete in 1909. The rapids (Laufen) of the Rhine pass Laufenburg on the Swiss border. They are the scene of a triangular love relationship which ends in the drowning of the engaged couple Siddy and Albiez; the survivor relates the incident some twenty years later. The Laufen in spate is a symbol of the surging torrent of the emotions.
