Der Neckar

Neckar, Der, a river rising in the southern Black Forest near Schwenningen, flowing past Rottweil, Tübingen, Stuttgart, Marbach, Heilbronn, and Heidelberg, and entering the Rhine by Mannheim. Next to the Rhine, it is perhaps the German river most celebrated in song (see Bald gras' ich am Neckar, bald gras' ich am Rhein), partly because of its association with the ancient university of Heidelberg. Hölderlin wrote an ode entitled ‘Der Neckar’.
