Der Verschollene

Verschollene, Der, an unfinished novel written by F. Kafka between 1912 and 1914, and published by Max Brod in 1927 with the title Amerika. A dramatization appeared in 1957. The first chapter was published separately as Der Heizer (1913). The young emigrant to America, Karl Roßmann, is rejected by his relatives and by society, is robbed by tramps and roughly handled in his attempt to find a settled job until he seems at last likely to find acceptance in ‘Das Naturtheater von Oklahoma’. At this point the story breaks off. Der Verschollene, ed. J. Schillemeit, appeared in 1982, Der Verschollene. Apparatband in 1983.
