Waldbruder, Der, a short work of fiction written by J. M. R. Lenz in 1776. It bears the sub-title Ein Pendant zu Werthers Leiden and is told in the form of letters (see Briefroman). Its chief character, Herz, loves a lady above his station and, because of this unhappy affair, has taken to the woods. The story is based on Lenz's love for Henrietta von Waldner, a lady who was unacquainted with him. Der Waldbruder was published in Schiller's periodical Die Horen in 1797.
