Biography

Derek Leckenby, known as "Lek" to his friends, was the oldest member of Herman's Hermits, and the closest thing the band had to a "veteran" member when they started. Born in Leeds, England in 1945, he attended the William Hulme Grammar School and Manchester University. He'd taken up guitar as a boy, inspired by the early British rock & roll boom, but also by his love of American R&B -- especially the music of James Brown -- and he made his debut at the Oasis Club in Manchester in 1962, at age 17. He was asked one night by drummer Barry Whitwam to sit in with a group called the Heartbeats, and was immediately drafted as their lead guitarist -- at the end of that semester, his poor performance on his exams at Manchester University, where he'd been studying civil engineering, caused him to turn more directly to music. The Heartbeats later renamed themselves Herman's Hermits and picked up professional management; Leckenby and Keith Hopwood shared the guitar duties, with Leckenby initially playing lead, though by the time they were established, they traded off those duties on-stage. After they got their recording contract with EMI, the members' contributions were always slightly vague, owing to the fact -- an open secret even in that relatively innocent time -- that producer Mickie Most relied on top session players to record the instrumental tracks onto which lead singer Peter Noone and the others would add their vocals; thus, on their extraordinary string of hit singles from 1964 through 1969, Hopwood and, to a lesser degree, Leckenby, would only provide background vocals. When the group performed, however -- as captured in concert footage such as the New Musical Express Poll Winners' Concert at Wembley Arena -- they had to deliver the goods themselves, and Leckenby and company would do just that; with his tall, bespectacled persona, Leckenby cut a figure similar to Buddy Holly or Hank Marvin on-stage, concentrating on his playing while Hopwood would move around, responding to the excitement of the crowds and punching up the music or the vocals. Leckenby and Hopwood and, to a lesser degree, bassist Karl Green, also contributed to the creative side of the group, writing a small but significant body of original songs that appeared on their albums. Leckenby and Hopwood co-founded a music company, Pluto Productions in 1968, as the band's activities began to wane, and for several years wrote and produced music for television shows and commercials. They later split up their partnership, and Leckenby left the company. He and drummer Barry Whitwam continued to work as "Herman's Hermits" well into the 1990s with a variety of personnel, but Leckenby -- who, it was later learned, had long battled cancer -- finally succumbed to the disease in 1994. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

Biography

Lead guitarist Derek Leckenby and Peter Noone founded the British pop group Herman's Hermits in 1964. The group had several hits on both sides of the Atlantic, including the novelty tune "I'm Henry the Eigth, I Am" and "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter". At the peak of the group's popularity in the mid-'60s, they followed the Beatles lead and appeared in two musical feature films, Hold On (1966) and Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter (1968). ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Derek 'Lek' Leckenby (14 May 1943 - 4 June 1994) was an English lead guitarist, most famous for his work with Herman's Hermits.

Early life

Leckenby was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He was educated at William Hulme's Grammar School, Manchester, and commenced a civil engineering degree course at Manchester University, before leaving to become a professional musician.

Herman's Hermits

An accomplished guitarist and musician, he played the lead guitar for Herman's Hermits. He played on many of the band's early hits and composed songs with band mates Keith Hopwood, Peter Noone and Karl Green. He admired their record producer Mickie Most, but was bothered at times by Most's use of session musicians on the band's mid career hits, despite the Hermits' more than acceptable skills as players. Leckenby played on all the band's US and UK Number One hits and provided the solo on "I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am". Karl Green commented on VH1's My Generation-Herman's Hermits that Most's use of session musicians on some of the band's records was unfair to Leckenby in particular. During the 1970s and 1980s Leckenby tried to set the record straight with the rock media explaining the large body of guitar playing he contributed to the band's records. Even the band's US label ABKCO failed to credit the Hermit's playing in the liner notes to its retrospective on the band. Leckenby's skills are apparent not only on Herman's Hermits records, but also on videos of the band's live appearances including the 1965 NME music awards and Herman's Hermits Hilton Show. Additionally, Leckenby can be heard on several releases by Hopwood's Pluto Music, including the compilation album, Vault 69.

Leckenby is credited with arranging the band's first big hit, "I'm into Something Good". His skill on guitar and later dobro are on releases such as the LP A Whale of a Tale, and the later singles such as, "Ginny Go Softly" and "Heart Get Ready for Love".

Despite the split with Noone, Leckenby always spoke highly of his friend and defended the singer's vocal abilities to critics. Noone also praised Leckenby's talent in numerous interviews over the years.

Leckenby succumbed to cancer on 4 June 1994, at the age of 51.
