Biography

Dervish is one of Ireland's most exciting tradition-rooted bands. With its combination of virtuosic instrumentation, high-energy arrangements and the ultra-sweet vocals of Cathy Jordan, Dervish continues to weave its own path in Ireland's great musical heritage. Although the group formally came together in 1988, the roots of Dervish trace back much further. Flute and tin whistle player Liam Kelly and accordion player Shane Mitchell first collaborated at the age of seven and nine, respectively. Within three years, the duo was playing regularly at a pub owned by Kelly's father. During high school, the two musicians formed a band called Pointin. Although the group placed first in a contest at the Ballyshannon Folk Festival and appeared on popular Irish television program The Late Late Show, the group failed to record. While attending college in Sligo, Kelly and Mitchell performed with a rock band called Who Says What. The band also included Michael Holmes, a bass player and songwriter who later added guitar and bouzouki to the band's sound. A turning point in Dervish's history came when Kelly, Mitchell and Holmes were joined by mandola and mandolin player Brian McDonagh, a founding member of Oisian. After recording three albums with Oisian, McDonagh had left the group and moved to Sligo. Although the musicians were temporarily separated into two camps in the mid-1980s, with Kelly and Holmes moving to London and Mitchell and McDonagh remaining in Sligo, they reunited when Sligo-based label Sound Records sought to record an album of local musicians. The resulting all-instrumental album, The Boys of Sligo, was released in 1988 and featured Martin McGinley on fiddle, and helped to establish the group as a working ensemble. Following the album's release, the group added Jordan on vocals and adopted the name Dervish. McGinley was subsequently replaced by Shane McAleer, a fiddler from County Tyrone who had won the All-Ireland Championship in 1990. Due to technical problems, Dervish's second album, Harmony Hill, released in 1993, was recorded twice. Two years later, Dervish released two albums (Playing with Fire and At the End of the Day and toured in the U.S. Live in Palma, released in 1997, is a 22-track double CD, recorded during a concert in Palma, Majorca. Although the majority of their repertoire consists of traditional tunes, Dervish has been increasingly performing original tunes by Kelly and Holmes. The duo's songs have been covered by Irish bands such as Capercaille. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

History

In 1991 the band were joined by Roscommon born singer Cathy Jordan and all Ireland champion fiddle player Shane Mc Aleer. Dervish’s first album, Harmony Hill was released in 1992 to critical success. In 1994 their second album was released. “Playing with Fire”. The album reached number 1 in the Irish Folk Music Charts and World/Roots music charts internationally. In 1996 Dervish released “At the End of the Day", which won the Hot Press Folk Album of the Year Award.

Dervish concert performances are characterised by a myriad of tones and moods ranging from high energy tunes, played with fluidity and intuitiveness, to beautifully measured songs, from charming lyrics of life and love, to inspiring melodies that lift audiences from their seats. All the elements are drawn together by Cathy Jordan¹s masterful stage-presence. Her stories to the songs and her interaction with the audience draws people into the music in a way very few performers can achieve.

Their fourth album, “Live in Palma¹ was recorded in front of a live audience at Palma de Majorca¹s “Theatre Principal” in April 1997 and received critical acclaim. In the same year the readers of Irish Music Magazine awarded Dervish Best Overall Trad/Folk Band of the Year. In 1998 Shane McAleer left the band and was replaced by well known Sligo musician, Séamus O¹Dowd with a distinct Sligo style fiddle playing and All Ireland Champion fiddle player Tom Morrow from Co. Leitrim. This seven piece line were now Cathy Jordan (vocals, bodhrán, bones), Tom Morrow (fiddle, viola), Shane Mitchell accordion), Liam Kelly (flute, low whistle), Séamus O¹Dowd (guitars, harmonica), Michael Holmes (bouzouki) and Brian Mc Donagh (mandola, mandolin). The fifth album from the group, Midsummer¹s Night”, released in 1999 was voted Irish Trad Album of the Year.

In 2001, Dervish released “Decade” a compilation of tracks from their first five albums. In 2003 Dervish released “Spirit” followed by “A Healing Heart” in 2006. In 2003 Sligo City Council bestowed the freedom of the borough of Sligo on the band for their international artistic achievements and their dedication and promotion of their local heritage.

In 2005 The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Mr Bertie Ahern invited Dervish to accompany him on an Irish trade mission to China. In 2006 Dervish accompanied Irish President Mary McAleese on her State Visits to Latvia and Lithuania and performed a special concert in the Great Hall of Latvia Society House in Riga for President McAleese and President Vike-Freiberga of Latvia. On 24 May they will give a concert in Vilnius in honour of President Adamkus of Lithuania.

On November 14, 2006, the Irish national broadcaster RTÉ announced that Dervish were to perform the Irish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007.[1] Dervish finished last with five points, awarded to them from the Albanian back up jury due to a failed televote, for their performance of "They Can't Stop The Spring"[2].

In October 2007 Dervish released “Travelling Show” partly produced by John Reynolds.
