Des Feldpredigers Schmelzle Reise nach Flätz, a novel by Jean Paul, published in 1809. Written in the first person, it is a burlesque apologia by Army Chaplain Attila Schmelzle for his notorious cowardice, and is set out in the form of the record of a journey. The chaplain's incongruous name draws attention to the satirical stance of the work which Jean Paul described as a character study (‘Charakterstück’).
