History
The Leicester and Swannington Railway was first laid down in 1832 by Robert Stephenson. It passes within a mile of the village where the main station building survives. Today this railway is devoted to freight traffic.
Outside the village, Carts Field was developed as Desford Aerodrome by Reid and Sigrist by 1936 as a flying training school with George E Lowdell as Chief flying Instructor. The majority of aeroplanes used were De Havilland Tiger Moth single engined biplanes. An early form of flight simulator was also used and was visible from the public road. The aerodrome was used by the Leicester Aero Club until it moved to nearby Ratcliffe Aerodrome and the first flight of the New Malden-built Reid & Sigrist RS.1 Snargasher was made by Lowdell from Desford in early 1939. Caterpillar Inc. now has a large manufacturing plant on this site.
