(1653–1728)
Paris-born architect, he recorded many ancient structures in Rome, which he published in Les Édifices Antiques de Rome (1682), later brought out an an English (1771–95). The book made his reputation, for it was the most accurate printed source for Antique Roman architecture to date. It was a source for the detail of many significant C18 buildings (e.g. Kent's entrance-hall at Holkham Hall, Norfolk), and was an important influence on C18 styles, especially Neo-Classicism.
