Design specification

Wikipedia: Design specification

A design specification provides precise and explicit information about the requirements for a product design. A design specification provides in-depth detail about the functional and non-functional design requirements including assumptions, constraints, performance, dimensions, weight, reliability and standards. It provides the user with all of the information and references necessary so they can achieve the intended outcome. The design specification result should be consistently reproducible providing the same standard outcome.

A design specification is a document providing functional and non-functional specifications. Its focusses on the function of a product whether it be a mechatronic motor, a side mirror for an automobile or a complete software product, or even a wall for a kong vault in parkour.

Design specifications are used across a wide range of industries which can include buildings, product manufacturing, product fabrication and information technology. Design specifications are used for buildings, parts, electronics, software, hardware, automobiles and clothing.
