(computer science) A set of computer programs providing functions that simulate the office accessories normally found on a desktop, such as a notepad, appointment calendar, and calculator. Also known as desktop application; desktop organizer.

The term is used either to contrast such "local" applications with Web-based applications that also run in the same computer, or to contrast personal computer applications with mobile phone applications.
