  1. Precisely limited or defined; definite: a determinate number; a determinate distance.
  2. Conclusively settled; final.
  3. Firm in purpose; resolute.
  4. Botany.
    1. Terminating in a flower and blooming in a sequence beginning with the uppermost or central flower; cymose: a determinate inflorescence.
    2. Not continuing indefinitely at the tip of an axis: determinate growth.

A term used to describe a plant whose terminal growth is stopped by the production of a flower and fruit cluster. Determinate tomato cultivars, for example, are compact plants that bear their entire crop over a short season. See also indeterminate.
