German Literature Companion:

Deutscher König Albrecht I

Albrecht I, Deutscher König (1255-1308, Brugg on the Aare), was the eldest son of Rudolf I of Habsburg. In 1292 he failed to be elected German King, the Electors preferring the less powerful Adolf von Nassau, but he attained his ambition six years later, after Adolf's death. His election was not recognized by the Pope until 1303. Albrecht sought to extend his power by force of arms, but was assassinated in 1308 by his nephew Johann Parricida, an episode which is recounted in Schiller's Wilhelm Tell. He is buried in Speyer Cathedral.
