Devensian
The last full glacial series in Britain, lasting from about 70 000 to about 10 000 years bp. It is very approximately equated to the north European Weichsel Glaciation, the North America Wisconsin Stage, and the Alpine Würm Glaciation. The Devensian was preceded by the Ispwichian Interglacial, and followed by the, present-day, Flandrian Interglacial. During this time, sea levels were 130-160 m below current levels; Ireland was joined to Britain, and Britain to northern Europe and Scandinavia by a broad dry plain. The later part of the Devensian embraces pollen zones 1-111 as defined by Godwin (1940). See pleistocene chronology.
