Broadcast history

Bartley spent the early 70's working in Virginia, mostly in Charlottesville and Lynchburg. By 1978, he was Program Director at then-Adult Contemporary WBBM-FM in Chicago.

Bartley debuted in national syndication in 1982, when he debuted Solid Gold Saturday Night on the RKO Radio Network, later bought by United Stations. Bartley created, produced and hosted the program, and added a short-form "Solid Gold Scrapbook" feature in 1985. Bartley left United Stations in January 1988; replacing him on that network was New York radio personality Bob Worthington.

Both features were revived nearly intact when he joined Westwood One later in 1988. The Saturday night oldies show was renamed "The Rock & Roll Oldies Show" and the feature renamed "New Gold on CD." Bartley hosted for Westwood One until 1991, when he was replaced by Mike Harvey. Harvey continued the Saturday night show under the name "Super Gold," which continues to this day on Dial Global.

Bartley joined ABC Radio later in 1991. "New Gold on CD" did not come with him (Harvey continued to host that feature), but the Saturday night show did, being renamed again to "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits." In addition, Bartley added two more long-form programs to his duties: "American Gold," an oldies countdown show spun off from the popular American Top 40 franchise (which ABC owned at the time), and "Yesterday Live," a retrospective on music of the 1970s and early 1980s. "Yesterday Live" ended its run in 2000. Bartley announced his departure from ABC effective March 31, 2009; Tom Kent has already been hired by ABC to replace Bartley.

Both of his existing ABC shows were revived when Bartley joined the United Stations Radio Networks the next day. (Ironically, the same network distributes the programs that Kent founded in 2002 under the TKO Radio Network banner.) Though American Gold changed its name to The Classic Countdown Show and neither show now refers to the Billboard charts, both shows otherwise remained unchanged.

In 2009, Bartley joined the staff of WCBS-FM with a four-hour local Sunday Night Countdown.
