German Literature Companion:

Die Schaubühne als moralische Anstalt betrachtet

Schaubühne als moralische Anstalt betrachtet, Die, Schiller's inaugural address to the Kurpfälzische Deutsche Gesellschaft, Mannheim, read on 26 June 1784. Schiller sees the theatre as an ally of religion and law, deriding folly, exposing vice, acquainting men with fate, and propagating wisdom. The address was published by Schiller in the first number of his periodical Die Rheinische Thalia (1785, see Thalia). When spoken, it was prefixed by an autobiographical apologia, which was omitted on publication.
