The period of sexual quiescence intervening between two periods of estrus.

The resting period between estral periods of animals. The female rejects the male, blood levels of estrogens are minimal and progesterone levels are high. This provides a physiological state in the uterus which is most conducive for implantation and growth of the developing fetus. Diestrus is terminated by luteolytic factors, such as prostaglandin F2α secreted by the endometrium, if pregnancy does not occur.
