Sports Science and Medicine:

digit symbol substitution test

DSST

A simple and sensitive neuropsychological test to objectively evaluate cognitive function that can be used in a sporting situation, for example, following concussion of an athlete. It is a test of speed of information processing that involves substituting a symbol for a random succession of numbers. The athlete is given 90 s to fill in as many boxes as possible with the appropriate symbol and then given a score. In sports with a high risk of concussion, athletes are tested prior to the competition period to provide a baseline score.
