O'Brien, Dillon (1817-82), novelist. Born in Tullabeg, Co. Roscommon, and educated there, he emigrated to the USA, working as a teacher among Native Americans before settling in St Paul, Minnesota. The Dalys of Dalystown (1866), a novel, is set in Ireland. It advocates a solution to Ireland's land question based on the virtues of a Catholic upper class. Dead Broke is concerned with the conflict between human values and the modern world.
