(c.1470–1531)

Leading Portuguese architect working within the Manueline style, responsible for the remarkable nave and chapter-house of the Church of the Order of Christ at Tomar (1510–14): it has a mass of extraordinary and exuberant decoration, including net-like vaults over the two-storey space, and external ornament combining Royal coats-of-arms, emblems, musical instruments, ropes, sails, and marine flora and fauna. Arruda's brother, Francisco (c.1480–1547), was responsible for the strange and exotic tower at the Jeronymite Monastery at Belém (1515–20), erected to defend the approaches to Lisbon.
