Diponegoro University (Indonesian: Universitas Diponegoro) , is a state university located in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia and a member of IDGHE. Founded in 1956 as a private university by Semarang University Foundation, it is a pioneer of higher learning institutions in the Indonesia , also the first and oldest corporation in Central java.
Initially called " Semarang University", the institution was named Diponegoro University on October 5, 1960, after granted state university accreditation by the Indonesian Government. "Diponegoro" name is taken from an Indonesian hero who waged war against the Dutch colonialism in early 19th century. At present this institution better known as UNDIP.
UNDIP is the best University in Central Java Indonesia. It is renowned for being at the forefront of engineering and technological knowledge. During 2000 UNDIP expanded engineering faculty and Research facility in Tembalang campus, has 11 faculties and the number of research centres, in addition to academic departments to service technological, educational and research.
An important result of UNDIP’s carefully managed modernisation is a steadily improving education system that has poured millions into research and development, and to encouraging international students into the country. In the 2007 THES-QS Top World University Rankings, the Diponegoro University (UNDIP) featured well in the ranking of the world’s top 500 universities (487th position), which increases from 495th position in 2006. The quality of teaching in UNDIP has improved greatly over recent years, following a government decree that all teachers and lecturers have to possess a Master/PhD degree. The strategic actions had been taken in line with to the new paradigm of higher education development program which has been proposed by Indonesian Directorate General of High Education (IDGHE).

History
The establishment of Diponegoro University began from mid-1956 preceded by establishment of Semarang University Foundation. Its founding fathers were Mr. Imam Bardjo, Mr. Soedarto, Mr. Dan Sulaiman and Mr. Soesanto Kartoatmodjo.
Officially Semarang University was opened on January 9, 1957. Considering its young age with the limited educational infrastructures, in that time educational institutions such as Academy of State Administration, Academy of Business Administration, Academy of Engineering (later School of Engineering) was just founded. Their 1st deans were Mr. Goenawan Goetomo (Academy of State Administration), Drs. Tjioe Sien Kiong (Academy of Business Administration), Prof. Ir. Soemarman (Academy of Engineering).
In the 3rd anniversary of Semarang University on 9 January 1960 President Soekarno changed the name of Semarang University to Diponegoro University, as the appreciation for achievement establishing the high educational field in Central Java. Diponegoro (Private) University was declared as a state university, since October 5, 1960, that became the birthday of Diponegoro University. The then faculties were School of Law and Public Science, School of Economics, School of Engineering and Normal School.
Institutions
A faculty of about 142 professors serve as of school year 2008, had 1750 academic staffs and 1065 administrative staffs. On the end September 2008, the registered students were 24,424. The ratio of lecturers and students exists in the ideal number 1 : 14. This number didn’t include freelance and half-time lecturers. UNDIP offers many departments. In the total 10 Faculty, there are 21 departments and 68 study program relevant to the necessity of surrounding communities. According to the lattest survey (2006) perform by The Times Magazine United Kingdom, UNDIP is included in the list of 500 best university worldwide.

Undip is governed by one head of rector, with four vice rector. The head rector is the day-to-day administrator of Undip and is appointed by and responsible to the Undip University.

Admissions
Undip accepted 30% of applicants for the class of 2004, by the program PSSB, UMPTN for Undergraduate. Admission to a course & research-based postgraduate programme requires at least a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in the subject or related discipline. In addition, programmes may require candidates to demonstrate readiness for postgraduate study through a specific standard of achievement,with the approval of the Senate, programmes may specify relevant work experience as an additional admission requirement.Doctoral Degree require a Master’s degree from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate[2]
International Students
The Diponegoro University (UNDIP) welcomes international students from around the world with all educational backgrounds. International Applicants for admission to UNDIP's Undergraduate Program must have completed or are completing high school with a high qualification through the above methods. The medium of instruction or international class at UNDIP is English. However, the international students should understand Indonesian language step by step to be familiar with Indonesian culture. Applicants are expected to have achieved a minimum level of English proficiency to enable them to benefit from an UNDIP education.
However, in 25 August 2005, Susilo Wibowo, Semarang’s Diponegoro University university rector announced that it had stopped admitting Malaysian students for the 2009-10 academic year. [3]
Campus
UNDIP is located in Semarang – the capital city of Central Java. This university has 5 campuses outside Semarang as far away as Jepara, about 70 km northeast Semarang.
Pleburan Campus is the oldest campus since the existed campuses were merged in its early establishment. This campus occupies seven-hectare area, which facilitates School of Social Sciences, Magister and Doctorate Program and some operational units. Gunung Brintik Campus is the place of School of Medicine located near Dr. Kariadi Hospital.
Teluk Awur Campus (60 hectares) is located in Jepara, 70 km northeast Semarang. The Teluk Awur Campus is the biggest of its kind in Indonesia, and currently become the home of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science.
The largest and the newest one, Tembalang Campus occupies about 213-hectare area, an administrative center ,Central library Widyapuraya, Engineering Faculty and facilitates School of Science.
Library system
The Undip System is centered in Widyapuraya Central Library in Tembalang Campus and comprises over 400 individual libraries and over 4000 volumes. Every Faculties have department library and literature from Journal Alumni.
Notable people
UNDIP has produced many famous alumni, along with a few infamous ones. Among the best-known is Indonesian political leaders, Prof. Dr. Muladi SH.

Publications International Publications and Citations of Diponegoro University have been timely updated by searching in the scientific indexing, i.e. SCOPUS, SCIRUS, ISI WEB KNOWLEDGE, etc.
Vision
In the year 2020, UNDIP intends to be an Excellent Research University. Efforts to achieve the vision, UNDIP defines its mission as follow :
- 1. to provide the best education program in the fields of science, technology, and art
- 2. to conduct professional scientific researches and publication as contributions to the development of science and technology,
- 3. to provide qualified public services in accordance to the society demand and the development of knowledge sciences and
- 4. conducting evaluation regularly to improve quality, autonomy, accountability, and accreditation of university.
Vision, Mission and the main scientific interest of UNDIP have been focused on Eco-Coastal-Region Development.
